Choose the size of curling barrel you want to use. The general rule of thumb is; the smaller the barrel, the tighter the curls. If you are going for tight prominent curls, use a barrel with a 0.75 – 1 inch diameter. If you want loose waves, go for something bigger like a 1.5-2 inch barrel. You can also decide if you’d like to use a curling iron with a clip (clamp) or a clip-less curling wand. The curling iron with a clip helps create lovely ringlets whilst the clip-less curling wand gives out a more natural and tighter curl.
