Aimee Mullins

Aimee was born with fibular hemimelia and had both legs amputated below the knee at just one year of age. Nevertheless, her athleticism was key to her running against able-bodied athletes in sporting meets and nabbing Paralympic records in 1996.

She made her mark in the fashion world in 1999 when she walked for Alexander McQueen’s show on a pair of solid ash prosthetic legs with boots worn on them. In a 2009 talk on idea sharing platform TED, Aimee joked about how she was able to manipulate her height based on the type of prosthetic legs she wore.
