5 questions with … Andrew Goetz and Matthew Malin of Malin+Goetz

In 2004, Andrew Goetz and Matthew Malin made the tough decision to leave their jobs - Goetz was the marketing director for Swiss-based design manufacturer Vitra and Malin was managing and developing the Helmut Lang fragrance division - to create a skincare offering "that was easy and uncomplicated (with a) focus on sensitive skin". They launched beauty brand Malin+Goetz as an intention "to fill several voids in the market" and, eight years on, it would appear that the duo has managed to do that quite well. Here, they dish out a couple of beauty tips, their best-sellers and how Malin+Goetz has transformed their lives.

Growing up, was skincare important to you?

Andrew: Matthew actually suffers from sensitive skin so he's (had a) longer involvement with skincare. My skin's very resilient. I (used) a bar of Neutrogena to wash my face, to shave and (for) my body and hair. 

What about you, Matthew? What did you use before launching the brand?

Matthew: I can't say that I used any single thing in particular. I've seen a dermatologist my entire adult life - I take topical and often oral medication for my ailments (rosacea, eczema, seborrhoea) so I think it's quite serious. I've experimented for many years (on products) that work for me, don't irritate me or don't exacerbate existing conditions. Kiehl's doesn't irritate my skin and that was a big help at one point in my life. What I think we've done with Malin+Goetz (is) how we've gotten to the stages where it doesn't exacerbate or create irritation. It really does help us look our best. My skin has probably never looked better than it does today.

What are your best-sellers?

Historically, our best-sellers have remained the same. Our Grapefruit Facial Cleanser is one of the very best-selling (items) that we have in our entire range, as well as our Vitamin E Facial Moisturiser. In the past year, the standout products have been our Detox Face Mask, which is really an extension of these exact products. It is a deep cleansing and deeply hydrating product all in one to be used once or twice a week. In addition to that, our No 1 selling product is our Eucalyptus Deodorant which is alcohol- and aluminium-free.

When it comes to maintaining healthy skin, do you live by any mantra?

Andrew: Eating nutritiously, not smoking (and) staying out of the sun. If you do those things, you are almost halfway there. And then what you do is you supplement that with cleansing (and) moisturising.

Matthew: Staying out of the sun is definitely one thing that resonates. Washing your face with something gentle twice a day is (important) as well.

What do you think are the common mistakes women and men tend to make with their skincare choices?

Matthew: I think they use too much. I think that's probably one of the biggest things.

Andrew: I would say women use too much and men use too little.

Matthew: And they feel that using something aggressive is going to make an immediate difference to their skin but often what it does is create problems and irritations that probably weren't there in the first place.
