SINGAPORE — Actress Julie Tan, the fresh-faced lass who used to mimic girls in television commercials flipping their hair back and forth, is now the first from Singapore to be L’Oreal Professionnel’s celebrity spokesperson and It girl.
“I think of (L’Oreal) as an open secret to achieving my beautiful hair,” said Tan, who frequently pops by hair salons amid her hectic filming schedules. Her current hairstyle: the Side-Swept Red Ombre from L’Oreal Professionnel’s Spring Summer 2014 It Look Collection. “I really like my look. It’s something I’ve never tried before, so it’s a really refreshing look for me. It also boosted my confidence because the red is really sophisticated and makes me feel so grown up and sexy.”

The 21-year-old has steadily been carving a name for herself, ever since appearing in the TV series, The Promise, five years back and has added modelling, singing, dancing and hosting to her CV. She recently dropped by Seoul for her first TV presenter gig for the series, A Date With K-pop Stars, but she was reluctant to say if she picked up any hair-styling tips while mingling with the stars who were notorious for their hair-raising ’dos.
“That’s a secret they made me promise not to tell,” quipped the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) graduate.
But what Tan did confess to was the amount of effort she put into maintaining her silky locks, simply because she believes “hair represents one’s personality”.
Q: How do you typically style your hair?
A: When my hair is wet, I will apply L’Oreal Professionnel Absolut Cellular Repair Thermo Leave in Cream, which not only protects my hair before I blow-dry it, but also leaves it with a natural gloss. I usually blow-dry it straight as that’s a look that’s easy to manage.
Q: Any tips for salvaging a bad hair day?
A: If my hair is frizzy, I will use L’Oreal Professionnel’s Mythic Oil Color Glow serum to tame my hair. It also helps to protect my hair colour, as I’m now sporting the Red Ombre look that is one of L’Oreal Professionnel’s SS14 It Looks. Otherwise, wearing a cap always works and, if it’s really bad, I’ll choose to stay home!
Q: What’s the most drastic thing you’ve done or wanted to do to your hair?
A: That would be when I chopped off my long hair and had purple highlights for my role in Gonna Make It, a Channel 8 drama in which I play a hairdresser. My mum isn’t someone who fancies such hairstyle so, if it wasn’t for that role, she wouldn’t have approved me having that hair!
Q: What is your favourite hair treatment?
A: I really love the L’Oreal Professionnel Absolut Cellular Repair Thermo Repairing Masque! It strengthens and conditions my hair well, which is important because, as an actress, my hair has to undergo regular styling that can be very damaging.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Comfort is key! I like to be comfortable in whatever hairstyle or clothes I’m in — translucent tops are a big no-no for me. I usually go with a perfectly-cut white blouse that flatters my figure and a pair of jeans. I believe that classics will never go wrong. My style icon is Audrey Hepburn. To me, she is the classic icon of grace.
