Kakuyasu Uchiide, International Artistic Director of Shu Uemura, gives us the lowdown on the latest Japanese beauty trends
Oh, how times change. Just a decade ago, Japan had the Asian beauty scene on lock, only to be dethroned (at least in the 18-25 crowd) by Korean BB Creams, CC creams, and countless other products touted by popular K-idols. With all the talk about K-trends like gradient lips, a dewy complexion, and straight brows, we couldn’t help wondering what’s going on in Japan lately. Are giant circle lenses still in style? Do girls still wear layer upon layer of false eyelashes? What about lip colours? SO MANY QUESTIONS.
Luckily, we had the privilege of meeting Kakuyasu Uchiide, international artistic director of Shu Uemura, when he was in town last month for the brand’s Beauty Art Make-Up Competition in Tangs VivoCity. Uchiide-san, who has worked for Shu Uemura for 26 years (and who trained under Mr. Uemura himself), was more than happy to oblige when we asked him for the low-down on the latest Japanese beauty trends.
