Does fat-zapping technology actually work?

Last week, we wrote about fat "freezing" technology. Here's our review of an alternative technology: rapid fat cell-burning with Liposonix

Like many women who love pastries, hate exercise, and spend half the day seated in a cubicle, I have a belly. I can’t remember the last time I bought a form-fitting shirt, nor can I bring myself to wear pants that aren’t stretchy or high-waisted. One time, while I was wearing a dangerously dainty sundress (purchased four years ago, at the peak of my “no candy” phase), an older gentleman actually offered me his seat on the bus. Was he just being nice? Or did he think I was pregnant? I started reviewing my options. I could join a gym. I could cut out carbohydrates. I could start saving up for body shaping underwear. But as fortune would have it, I chanced upon a much quicker solution: zapping my stomach fat with Liposonix, a non-invasive procedure that destroys enough fat cells to reduce one’s waistline by an entire pants size.

Sound too good to be true? As science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke wrote, “any technology, when sufficiently advanced, is indistinguishable from magic.” So about four months ago, I spoke with Dr. Martin Huang, Director and Plastic Surgeon at The Cosmetic Surgery Clinic in Paragon, to get the down-low on this procedure – and to try it for myself (on a small square of fat, mind you. I hadn’t given up on traditional methods just yet).

"Liposuction remains the gold standard for body part shrinking. Why is it the gold standard? Because it’s still able to achieve the best results,” Dr. Huang said. “However, in reality, many patients welcome the idea of non-surgical alternatives to help them remove unwanted fat, and that demand has spurred the industry on to continue to develop machines that help us to remove fat non-surgically and non-invasively."

While liposuction requires surgery, anesthesia, and a few days of recovery time, Liposonix uses high intensity focus ultrasound (HIFU) to selectively eradicate fat cells. Picture the machine as an iron that blasts unwanted blubber with thermal energy as it sweeps across your gut. Within an hour, you can go home. Undergo this procedure once, and after about a month, you start wearing your old jeans again. There isn’t even any downtime. By delivering ultrasound energy at a specific depth of 1.3 centimeters (far below the surface of the skin), it can blast fat cells without giving you third-degree burns.
