The Iron Lady (2011)
Costume Designer: Consalata Boyle
Margaret Thatcher (Meryl Streep)
To research the costumes for The Iron Lady, Consolata Boyle studied patterns and pieces from some of Margaret Thatcherâs preferred designers including Aquascutum and Jean Muir as well as photographs and newsreels. From early political appearances to becoming party leader, Boyleâs designs reflect Thatcherâs ministerial wardrobe as she developed a groomed look in the pursuit of success. From her frequent palette of blue to details such as her handbag, shoulder pads, hats and heels, Boyle recreated the internationally recognisable look of Britainâs first female Prime Minister in convincing detail.
