SINGAPORE — You may remember Lum May Yee as Audrey Chan, the haughty beauty in the 2000 Singapore film adaptation of Romeo And Juliet called Chicken Rice War.
But unlike her character, the 41-year-old former actress and model is far from arrogant. Lum has been touted as a style icon in the Singaporean fashion industry, and she cites Kate Moss as her go-to style inspiration.
“I’ve always loved her. Her style is effortless and she never tries too hard to be trendy,” she said. “She’s got great taste in her choice of clothes and accessories, and she is amazing at mixing and matching vintage with the new and trendy, with a touch of classic.”
Lum, who married Steven Lam, director of home-grown jeweller The Canary Diamond Company, recently opened the multi-billion-dollar company’s latest project — bycanary at Tangs Orchard, displaying cult designer jewellery names such as Jade Jagger and John Hardy.
According to her, Singapore has become more fashion-forward — as compared with the ’90s — thanks to the success of the Audi Fashion Festival over the past five years. “I think that it has made Singapore into a fashion hub for designers, both established and emerging,” she said.
Q: What is your favourite item of clothing, your last purchase and your favourite clothes store?
A: I love my snakeskin print ACNE pants. They are more like loose-fit trousers, which are so comfy and stylish. My last purchase was a neon green Valentino studded sandals for the summer. My favourite clothing store has to be Net-A-Porter!
Q: What are the fashion items every woman should have in her closet?
A: Definitely a little black dress, black and nude coloured heels, a well-tailored pair of pants and a good clutch bag. I am also in love with the Clarisonic face-cleansing device. My skin really feels cleaner and softer after using it daily. I would recommend it as a must-have for every girl.
Q: Are you a strong believer in following trends? What is your favourite trend this season?
A: I love looking at trends, but don’t necessarily follow them. I dress for my body type and try to incorporate trendy pieces into my existing wardrobe. This season I love the middrift baring looks, but as I am currently pregnant, I can only admire it.
Q: What are your biggest fashion peeves, especially with people in Singapore?
A: Nothing irks me more than seeing people’s underwear or G-strings peek out of their jeans as they bend or sit.
Q: What is the best fashion advice you’ve ever received?
A: Dress for yourself and your body type instead of trying to please anyone. Always be comfortable and confident in your choices and outfits. Be brave and experiment with trends, but always know what looks good on your body and try to mix new trends with existing pieces from your wardrobe.
