5 Books for NS Guys
It's a rite of passage for every Singaporean male: two years of donning green and following instructions. Now, ask anyone who has done national service (NS) and they'll tell you that the best thing about being in camp for most of the week is that there is so much downtime. And take it from this writer, there's no better time to develop a reading habit than whilst serving the country.
But what should one read? It's a strange time for guys at that age; most have no idea what they want from life; and of course most detest having to waste two years of their lives. So perhaps a bit of perspective is in order.
The following quintet of books is ideal for those doing NS, as it will open one's eyes to what it is like, and what it was like, to serve in the army during wars in eras past and present. And upon reading these, you'll come to realise just how lucky we are to live in this country and at this time.
