Let's face it: Running can be a total b*tch. For a sport that mainly involves putting one foot in front of the other, it can certainly cause a disproportionate amount of discomfort and nasty side effects. These include, but are not limited to, extreme exhaustion, excruciating side stitches, and unattractive panting.
And I say all this as someone who has been running for much of her life. In spite of the sport's downsides however, there are many reasons to keep at it - or you know, to just get started already. For starters, running is one of the most efficient ways to get fit and achieve your fitness goals, whatever they are.
All it takes is putting on your running shoes and getting out the door for twenty minutes, a few times a week. If you're ready to get off the couch, or if you're a regular runner looking for inspiration to take your training to the next level, here are five books on the sport to get you going.
