Review: The Everything Drums Book

When people think about being in a band, chances are, they would choose to be the guitarist or the hyperactive frontman (or woman).

The drummer? Well, probably not as many. If you need a reason why you should take up drumming, The Everything Drums Book offers 10 good ones right at the start of the book: "Drummers are the heartbeat of any band"; "You don't need a PhD in music theory to play drums"; and topping the list - "No one can rock out like a drummer".

So think of this book as your launch pad to rock stardom (hey, we all have to start somewhere!). The Everything Drums Book is what wannabe-Travis Barkers and closeted musicians should have when they want to start learning the instrument.

Author Eric Starr has made a conscious effort not to load it with academic gibberish or complicated jargon. Instead, what he offers is a practical guide on how to play drums. Beginners, especially those who are armed with some basic knowledge but want to expand to into intermediate territory, should keep a copy handy.

Easy-to-follow chapters begin with the setting up your drum kit, posture, hand techniques, stick movements, notations and other key rudiments. Once the basics are covered, Starr dives into solos, fills, odd time signatures and brushes.

In addition to basic rock grooves, Starr also touches upon other popular styles like motown, hip hop and country. Chapters on Latin and jazz music introduce readers to triplets, comping, and unique Latin rhythms such as bossa nova and samba. Brief histories of the musical styles offer an interesting perspective of the music as a cultural phenomena and way of life.

Unfortunately this e-book does not come with the CD that is included in the physical version. As there are numerous examples and exercises in each chapter, listening to the audio would have helped readers get the most out of this book.

Learning to play an instrument involves more than reading notes. It is about creative expression and enjoying every note you play. And this book is a great way to start.
