Let’s get the obvious one out of the way. Being single means having one less person to endow with an expensive gift. One person might not seem like a lot when you’re shopping for dozens of other friends and family members, but while you can get away with  buying your cousin a $20 fondue set, a significant other would likely merit nothing less than diamonds, air tickets, a watch, or a luxury goods item.
