Now that the new year has begun and the festivities have wound down, you can finally pay your body the attention it deserves. All that indulgence over the last few weeks will take a toll on you, and if you're starting to feel lethargic and bloated and are looking for a way to jumpstart a new healthy eating regime, here's your how-to guide for getting rid of all the harmful toxins in your body.
CEO and nutritionist at The Nutrition Clinic Pooja Vig shares some tips to detoxing right. It's time for some damage control.
1. Start with key nutrition boosters
Vig suggests starting with a large glass of vegetable juice and some easy superfoods, such a chia seeds, before thinking about cutting food out. "It is always easier to do this if you focus on adding first to crowd out the bad stuff. Cut out sugar and wheat. Also make sure you add key supplements like fish oil probiotics and digestive enzymes."
2. Get rid of those nasty eating habits.
According to the Vig, some of the worst eating habits Singaporeans have are skipping breakfast or indulging in one that is high in sugar. In addition to this, insufficient vegetable intake and consuming too much processed and fast foods are also detrimental to your health.
3. Don't confuse detoxing with starvation
"People think the best way to detox is to fast or starve, but that can slow down the liver, which needs certain nutrients to work well." Vig adds that a better approach is to focus on nourishment instead of taking away things from your body.
4. Don't confuse detoxing with a weight loss diet
While a weight loss-focused diet might help us achieve certain things, Vig tells us that the results can't measure up to the benefits of a detox. The latter "can result in weight loss as well as reduce water retention, and improve skin, energy and digestion," and is the obvious victor of the two.
5. Keep at it for more long-term results
Still need a little more convincing to go on a detox programme? Some immediate benefits of a detox include better energy levels and improved digestion, with clearer skin, water retention, weight loss, and a clearer mind after just a few weeks. In the long run, detoxing could lead to a reduction in allergies and hormonal issues after your body is able to get rid of its toxins.
