Play on: A 2014 Singapore theatre fashion guide

Singapore is home to a bustling arts scene – from outdoor events such as Shakespeare In The Park to musicals such as “The Sound of Music” at MasterCard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands – there’s always something for everyone.

Different venues have varying dress codes, and if you have flipped your wardrobe inside out but still can’t find the appropriate attire to wear (after all, you’d want to look your best and dress to impress) — worry not, for here’s our style guide for both male and female art buffs:

Attending an outdoor event such as Shakespeare In The Park doesn’t mean going sloppy — think chic outfits that are actually a breeze to wear, yet don’t compromise on the style factor. We recommend that you go equipped with a pair of fashionable sunglasses, such as this Thierry Lasry pair, and leave the heels at home for a pair of comfy ballet flats.

Don’t forget a hat to shield the sun from — in case you’re arrive earlier in the afternoon for a picnic prior to the play.

Dressing for a play or musical at venues such as Esplanade Concert Hall means adhering to the stricter dress code, but since it’s an arts-related event, who says you can’t have fun with fashion too? We suggest sticking to a statement piece for your outfit, and let the accessories do the talking instead. The quirky Olympia Le-Tan clutch should do the trick. Remember to bring a scarf along, in case it gets chilly in the theatre.

Gentlemen, it’s time to leave that ragged t-shirt and unflattering bermudas at home when you’re going for an outdoor play. Instead, opt for a fitted cotton chambray shirt that is lightweight enough, and shorts that play around with textures. Last but not least, a rucksack and sunglasses if you wish to exude a relaxed vibe

1. Cote & Ciel Isar rucksack in grey (US$238/approx. S$297, buy now2. Montblanc sunglasses (US$191/approx. S$238, buy now3. Carhatt per neighborhood cotton chambray shirt (US$226/approx. When the event takes place indoors, there’s no excuse to not dress up. If you’re not used to loud colours like most art buffs are, accessories and subtle details are interesting ways to jazz up your outfit — so you won’t look like another face in the crowd.
