Singapore Repertory Theatre Presents the Dark, Sexy, and Funny 'Venus in Fur'

Writer-director of new play Thomas is on the phone lamenting about the quality of the actresses that have showed up for the audition for lead role in his adaptation of erotic novel Venus in Fur when the seemingly clueless Vanda waltzes in at the very last minute. Over the course of their interaction, she cajoles, charms and guilts him into letting her try out for the lead female character, switching between wannabe actress and sensual seductress, and back again, in a blink of an eye, and slowly exerts her dominance and power over the intrigued, and eventually submissive Thomas.

Adapted from a novella by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (whose name inspired the term masochism), David Ives' Venus in Fur is a dark, dangerous, and deliciously erotic cat-and-mouse game that leads you through psychosexual games in two realities -- between Thomas and Vanda, and between the Victorian male and female characters of the play their audition is based on.

Along the way, the shift in power balance is apparent as the mysterious surrounding Vanda are lathered on while the layers around the initially-composed Thomas are peeled off. But while the themes are dark, the mood is always kept comically racy. Together, the dynamic between Thomas and Vanda is one that's funny yet mysterious, sensual yet unsettling.
