Ben and Jerry's flavour engineer Peter Lind tells us which ice cream flavours he would prescribe for breakups, job-hunting, family drama, and more problems plaguing young adults
It's not often that you get to talk to a flavour guru, let alone one who specialises in your number one vice -- ice cream -- but we were lucky to meet Peter Lind, the man behind many of Ben & Jerry's most famous flavours. As the brand's "Flavour Guru and Primal Ice Cream Therapist," Peter's responsible for devising Ben & Jerry's famous wacky flavour combinations. The latest? Couch Potato, which combines vanilla ice cream, salted caramel sauce, and chocolate-coated potato chip clusters to make a curiously addictive concoction of flavours.
Peter, who stopped by XINMSN's offices while promoting the new flavour around Singapore, told us that he was impressed and inspired by all the delicious comfort food in Singapore. Tau sar piah, frog leg porridge, chendol, and even durian were among his favourites. While even he wouldn't consider marketing frog porridge or durian ice cream to American consumers, he does plan to take home a few samples of gula melaka, which he hopes to incorporate into an ice cream flavour one day.
But of course, how could we talk about comfort food without mentioning ice cream? Countless films depict women stuffing their faces with chocolate ice cream after suffering a breakup. Even we will admit to gorging down half a pint of Cherry Garcia in the midst of our quarter-life woes. When we asked Peter what he thought about ice cream's role in quelling people's angst, he pulled out a list of ice cream flavours, grinning knowingly when we asked which ice cream flavours he would prescribe for heartbreak, family drama, retrenchment, and more common sources of angst.
Got a pressing problem? Read on to see which ice creams would make it a little more tolerable.
Ben & Jerry's Couch Potato is available at major supermarkets, convenience stalls, and scoop shops for S$13.90 per pint.
