Why watch: We wonder: what if Bane were a criminal in the 1920s — and wore a cardigan (!) instead of a mask?
The low-down:True story of the Bondurant Brothers (Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf andChicago Code’s Jason Clarke) and their moonshine smuggling business inProhibition-era Virginia.
The buzz: If you like BoardwalkEmpire, then you’ll get a violent kick out of this Wangster flick. Awhat? Explains Aussie director John Hillcoat (The Road): “The periodit’s set in was the end of the West and the beginning of the gangsterperiod. So this film is the intersection of the two great Americangenres.” So marry the Western with the gangster movie and, presto, youhave a Wangster! And like that Emmy-hoarding Boardwalk Empire, Lawless, with its mix of stomach-churning violence, topical social commentary andstraight-up shoot-outs, is a potential contender come awards season. It’s already received its first nomination: the coveted Palme d’Or atthis year’s Cannes Film Festival. Elsewhere, some folks are just curiousto see if Tom Hardy can be taken seriously as a cardigan-wearingbad-ass. “I’m not ashamed to wear that,” Hardy declares. “Even though[my character] is physically the most dangerous of the three siblings,he is there to clean, cook, wear the apron, stash the money, and lookafter his brothers … The cardigan is a flag of maternal instinct.” Okay…
