Starring: Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Amanda Seyfried, Anne Hathaway
Directed by: Tom Hooper
Why watch: Wolverine vs Maximus Decimus Meridius — in 19th century Paris!
The low-down: It’s an adaption of an adaptation — a movie version of the hit musical based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel. Hugh Jackman plays Jean Valjean, an ex-con-turned-politician, and Russell Crowe his nemesis Javert, a cop with whom he has a bitter feud spanning decades.
The buzz: This movie has two things against it: it’s a period piece and a musical. And let’s face it, turning a Broadway smash into a movie isn’t always a shoo-win; just ask the producers of Rock of Ages. It also doesn’t bode well that the last time Hollywood did a (non-musical) Les Miz adaptation, starring Liam Neeson and Geoffrey Rush, it was a dud. But we’re hopeful that history won’t repeat itself. For starters, the sight of Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe appearing together for the first time should put bums in seats. That, and a couple of accolades during the year-end awards-season should reel in the crowds.
Opens: Dec 27
