After nearly two decades in the limelight, Victoria Beckham has no plans to slow down. The former Spice Girl went from “Posh” to Mrs David Beckham and a mother of four — and now is poised to conquer the fashion world with her own clothing and accessories line.
Beckham’s ability to design for women — and not just for herself — is clear in her figure-flattering designs that have snagged her the Best Emerging Luxury Brand at the 2011 Walpole Awards, and Designer Brand of the Year at the 2011 British Fashion Awards. Her designs are sold online at www.victoriabeckham.com and her first store will open in London later this year.
In Singapore in May to promote her Victoria Beckham accessories line at On Pedder and plug her fashion label, she fronts ELLE Singapore’s July 2014 cover and speaks to Features & Lifestyle editor Stacey Anne Rodrigues.
On the Victoria Beckham fashion label:
“We have five categories now: The main line, VVB [Victoria by Victoria Beckham], denim, eyewear [which includesoptical eyewear] and also handbags. We’ve started pre-collections as well, over the past few seasons. E-commerce is doing very, very well. We’re going to open our first flagship store in London, which I’m very excited about.”
On who wears Victoria Beckham:
“I think that she’s a woman that wants to look good. Appreciates luxury. Likes fashion. I want to make a woman feel her best. I want to empower women.”
On her need for control:
“I just like to be very involved with every element of my business. And I have a great team of people that work with me. But I’m very, very involved. My name is on the label, I have a point of view. And it’s important that it comes from me. I don’t want to hand that over to anybody else. I wouldn’t know how to...”
On whether she fears success or failure:
“I’m not afraid. I think you can learn from everything. I don’t ever think of the negatives, I think of the positives. I’m not competing with anybody else out there; I’m just competing with myself. I never went into this to prove anything to anybody, other than myself. I think if you’re too afraid of failure then you won’t challenge yourself, then you won’t move forward. I like to challenge myself.”
On the most surprising thing about being Victoria Beckham:
“People are probably surprised that I have a sense of humour. I like to take the mickey out of myself. As much as I take what I do very seriously, I also want to have fun. I like to poke fun at myself… And I think that surprises people.”
