The date’s going as planned. Suddenly, a gap in the conversation sends your mind into overdrive as you try to spit out some witty, out-of-this-world conversation starter. But instead, you blurt out something awkward, embarrassing even, and your date’s jaw drops. They stare at you squarely in the face and you can see halfway down their oesophagus. Not a good scene in anyone’s wildest dreams.

The fact is, first dates are expectantly awkward and make most of us neurotic. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Here are some fly topics that’ll bag you front row seats on your second date as well as topics that backfire (and result in your date dreaming up some imaginary problem they now have to tend to after a trip to the loo).
