Like it or not, these topics box you in one way or another, depending on how conservative or liberal you are! Strong views overwhelm and you really don’t want to spend your date debating weighty no-win issues like whether democracy is good, who plays defence in the pro-life/pro-choice debate or if they’re open to adoption.

The date mysteriousness will disappear fast once you take turns getting defensive about political views, which passion projects are rights ones. Ditto for religion! By all means, ask about their religious affiliations but don’t open up the podium for preaching your beliefs!
