DON’T: One-up her

There is nothing more confounding than when a friend sets herself up as your competitor. This can come by way of comments like, “You think your week was hard? Wait till you hear about mine,” or by more dramatic actions, like getting mad when more people pay attention to you than to her. Granted, some competitive feelings are natural. We’re only human. But don’t use these emotions as an excuse to one-up the other person or steal her thunder; otherwise, you’ll only introduce unnecessary tensions in your relationship.

A good friend is happy to share the limelight. Just look at how real-life BFFs Tina Fey and Amy Poehler bantered with each other during the Golden Globes this year. They gave each other room to shine as individuals, yet worked as a team so that the other person didn’t have to carry the atmosphere by herself.
