As big fans of Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, we were thrilled to learn that Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) will reunite in the series’ third film, Before Midnight, which sees the pair vacationing in Greece. Even though it’s been almost two decades since Jesse asked Celine to get off the train with him, we can still watch that clip periodically without thinking too much about how awkward it would actually be in real life.

But perhaps that’s part of the series’ charm. Despite the rawness of the characters, there’s still an element of escapism in watching the two characters fall in love while wandering the streets of Europe. That’s not to say that such grandiose romances can’t occur in real life – you just need to be adept at applying what you see on screen to real people, and in real situations.

Here are 10 of the most romantic movie gestures – and here’s how to make them work for you.
