We hate to break it to you, but this only works if you’re a good writer. It also helps if the person you’re writing about doesn’t mind that countless strangers may now have an intimate understanding of your relationship. Or even herself. So when you publish that poem about your girlfriend, make sure it contains more lines like, “Shall I compare thee to a Summer’s day?” than lines like, “If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.”
